Unknown fees are a financial-health issue before anyone decides whether they are high or low. If you cannot see what leaves your money, you cannot assess value, compare alternatives or explain an investment’s progress.
The gap is often a missing document rather than an excessive charge. Advice, platform, fund, DFM, insurance and transaction costs can appear in different places. Some are deductions; others are reflected inside prices or returns. A zero next to one line does not mean the whole arrangement costs nothing.
Fee visibility also helps clarify service. An ongoing payment should link to an identifiable ongoing role. The purpose is not to accuse a provider or reward the lowest number; it is to make the economics of the relationship understandable.
Try this now
Choose one product and fill in fee, recipient, frequency, rand amount and service. Use “unknown” rather than leaving a blank. Count how many unknowns remain.
Ask your advisor
- Can you reconcile the total cost across all layers?
- Which amounts were actually charged last year?
- What service or function accompanies each ongoing fee?
An unresolved fee is information to retrieve. It is not, by itself, proof of poor value or misconduct.
