“Tax-free” describes the account treatment. It says nothing about the investment risk or the cost.
A tax-free savings account, or TFSA, is a South African investment account in which qualifying returns are exempt from income tax, dividends tax and capital gains tax under current rules. It can hold different permitted investments, from cautious to volatile. Fees still apply, values can fall and access terms depend on the provider.
The account also has contribution limits. Amounts above the permitted limits can attract a tax penalty, and withdrawing money does not generally restore the contribution room already used. That makes duplicate accounts and repeated deposits worth tracking across all providers, and it means using the account for frequent short-term withdrawals can consume room that cannot simply be replaced.
Try this now
List every TFSA in your name and total the contributions made in the current tax year and over your lifetime. Keep withdrawals separate; do not subtract them from the contribution record.
Ask your advisor
- Which investment is held inside the TFSA and why does it fit the goal?
- What current annual and lifetime contribution room remains?
- What fees and access process apply?
SARS limits and penalty rules are time-sensitive. Verify the current tax year and your complete contribution history before adding money.
