Financial firms ask for identity, address and related documents partly to meet legal duties to know clients, assess risk and combat money laundering and financial crime. The request can be legitimate even when it feels repetitive.
It should still be explained. The firm should identify itself, describe what is needed, provide a secure submission route and handle personal information under applicable law. Requirements can differ by risk and relationship, so one person’s document list may not be identical to another’s.
Be alert to impersonation. Verify unexpected requests using contact details you obtained independently, especially when an email introduces a new upload link or payment instruction. Do not send more information than the verified firm requires.
Try this now
Before submitting documents, confirm the FSP or provider, purpose, secure channel, retention contact and whether copies need certification. Keep a record of what you sent and when.
Ask the firm
- Why is each document required?
- How will it be stored, used and updated?
- What alternative exists if I cannot provide that exact form of proof?
Compliance supports safer financial services. It should still be proportionate, clear and secure.
