The word is not enough to understand the benefit. Policies may assess ability to perform your own occupation, a similar occupation, daily activities or another stated test. Some benefits require permanence; others use severity levels.
Disability lump-sum cover is intended to pay a once-off amount when the insured person meets the policy’s disability definition. It may help settle debt, modify a home, fund treatment or provide capital after a permanent change in earning ability. The evidence, waiting period and exclusions also matter.
A lump sum does not automatically replace a salary for life. Turning capital into ongoing income introduces investment, inflation and longevity questions. It may complement income protection rather than substitute for it.

Find the disability definition in the policy wording, not only the schedule. Record the occupation on file, waiting or assessment conditions, cover amount and whether partial claims are possible.
Ask your advisor
- What exact event would qualify for this benefit?
- Is the definition linked to my own occupation, and is that occupation current?
- Which financial needs are meant to be met by a lump sum?
The contract definition and claim evidence control payment. Product names and informal descriptions do not.
