A benefit described as “four times salary” still needs the salary definition, event definition and tax treatment before you know what it is worth.

Your salary is only part of what may come with a job. Employer benefits can include pension or provident-fund contributions, life cover, disability or income benefits, medical scheme support and other assistance. The payslip rarely explains the whole package.

Ask for the fund benefit statement, member guide and insured-benefit summary. Find how much the employer and member contribute, what is deducted before investment, which portfolio applies and who is recorded as a beneficiary.

Also check what happens when employment ends. Group risk cover may stop, retirement money may need a decision and continuation options may have deadlines.

Try this now

Create a job-benefit sheet with five lines: retirement contribution, life cover, disability lump sum, income protection and medical support. Add source document, amount and exit condition.

Ask HR, the fund or an advisor

  • Which benefits are automatic and which did I elect?
  • How are contributions, costs and cover shown?
  • What would end or change if I resigned?

Employer benefits are governed by fund and policy rules. Confirm them before relying on a payslip label or cancelling personal cover.
