Employment cover may end or change when you resign, are retrenched, retire or move to a different employer. The benefit amount may be linked to salary, and the policyholder is often the fund or employer rather than you.

That does not make it less valuable. Employer risk benefits can provide life, disability or income protection at a group rate, and they belong in your cover picture. They are simply not identical to personally owned policies: definitions, tax treatment, beneficiary processes and conversion options can all differ.

Personal cover may be more portable and tailored, but it can require individual underwriting and cost more. The sensible comparison sees both sources together, including overlaps and gaps, before adding or cancelling anything.

Try this now

Request the latest employer benefit statement or member guide. Record each insured benefit, amount, definition, waiting period and what happens on leaving employment. Place it beside your personal policy schedule.

Ask your advisor or fund

  • Which employer benefits would stop if my employment ended tomorrow?
  • Is there a continuation or conversion option, and what deadline applies?
  • Where do employer and personal benefits overlap or leave a gap?

Do not cancel personal cover based only on a payslip description. Verify the group policy terms and portability first.
